Crocus sativus, commonly known as the saffron crocus, produces beautiful lilac-purple flowers with golden-yellow anthers. Each flower develops three distinctive red stigmas. These are harvested and dried to produce the valuable spice known as saffron. The plant remains compact and usually grows around 10–15 cm tall.
Plant the bulbs from late summer to early autumn in a sunny position. Choose well-drained soil and avoid areas where water collects. Flowers appear in autumn, often only a few weeks after planting.
This crocus is ideal for flower beds, rock gardens and group plantings. It can also grow successfully in pots and containers. The three red stigmas can be carefully harvested and dried for saffron.
